Replace 5th Floor Air Handling Unit and Associated Ducts – VA Medical Center

This project required our design team to survey the HVAC system on the 5th floor, Building 1 and design a Variable Air Volume (VAV) system with electronic controls. The new Air Handler Unit (AHU) utilizes the existing connections for steam and chilled water.    Construction required the removal of the existing ductwork system and installation of a new system throughout. It also required the removal of asbestos board surrounding the interior surfaces of the radiator wells throughout the 5th floor along with removal of the perimeter steam heating radiators. The AHU and ductwork serves approximately 15,000 square feet of patient care area. The area is currently occupied by Intensive Care, Mental Hygiene and Post Anesthetic Care Unit. The existing AHU was located on the roof structure of the 6th floor with supply and return air duct work penetrating the interstitial space between the 6th and 7th (penthouse) floors.  The existing system was a high velocity/dual duct system. The area is currently occupied by Intensive Care, Mental Hygiene and Post Anesthetic Care Unit.
